On Saturday, February 25th, 2012, GlobeMed at University of Rochester is hosting a benefit dinner themed “Hope in Health: the Next Generation of Leaders.” All proceeds benefit Kallpa Iquitos, a grassroots community development organization in Iquitos, Peru. The dinner is open to members of the University and members of the Rochester community and will feature speakers from Discovering Deaf Worlds and the GlobeMed National Office. The catered dinner will be held in the Grand Ballroom of the Meliora on the University of Rochester River Campus (500 Joseph C. Wilson Boulevard) and will begin at 5:30 pm. Tickets cost $10 for UR undergraduate students and $15 for the general public. GlobeMed is a student-driven, non-profit organization that aims to strengthen the movement for global health equity by empowering students and communities to work together to improve the health of the impoverished around the world. Founded in 2010, GlobeMed at the University of Rochester is one of 46 GlobeMed chapters nationwide and partners “Kallpa Iquitos” in Iquitos, Peru to support programs that bring together youth and adults in Iquitos to develop creative and innovative solutions that improve the health, education, and quality of life within their communities. The national GlobeMed model emphasizes long-term partnerships and working alongside the developing communities to create sustainable change. Specifically, this year’s efforts are directed towards two major self-identified issues in Iquitos: violence prevention and pollution. All proceeds from the benefit dinner will go towards implementing programs to combat these issues such as youth workshops, environmental cleanup campaigns, nonviolence awareness campaigns, and more.
